Q. When did The Stillroom Gift & Tea Shop open?
The Stillroom Gift & Tea Shop opened it’s doors for business on September 11, 2001 at what is locally known as “The Red Barn Shops.” We were at that location through May of 2002. In June of 2002, we closed our doors temporarily and relocated the business to historic Saxonburg where we have been ever since.
Q: What is a “Stillroom”?
A: A stillroom became popular in the 15th century and it was used as a room to hang and dry herbs and spices which were then designated for use as culinary, fragrance, herbal tisanes (herb tea) and medicinal needs. We sell nutmeg by the nut, bay leaves by the leave (because sometimes you only use a few a year)! Waiting for you at this space you will discover culinary lavender, mulling spices, fresh nutmeg and vanilla beans, perfume oils and potpourri ingredients including orris root, and other scenting materials. We have catnip and cat pillows, frankincense, myhhr as well as horehound throat drops in addition to bulk lavender. Loose patchouli and cloves by the ounce, cinnamon sticks and cardamom pods are sold by the piece!
We operate our 111 State Street location with the new business hours of Wednesday and Thursday 10-6, Friday 10-4 and Saturday’s from 10-2.
Q: Which Stash and Harney Teas do we have available?
A: We have over fifty flavors of Stash Teas available in our 111 State Street, Saxonburg location that range from herbal, black, green, white , red, organics and decaf . Stash tea samplers are also available.
We also carry an assortment of the most requested Harney & Sons Teas. These are available in standard tea bags packaged in foil, in silk sachets, loose by the ounce or loose in the 4oz tins.
In addition we always have the Mother’s Bouquet silk tea bags in the “tag along” keepsake tin and we always keep the White Wedding Teas in stock which are available in a beautiful large tin for larger gatherings or a “tag along” keepsake tin. The “tagalong” is a small keepsake tea tin that you can re-stock and keep in your purse. It will hold four tea bags. These little tins make a great little “extra” something for that special mom or for the bride- to- be. The small wedding tagalong tins can also be customized with beautiful script printing on the lid with the names and wedding date of the wedding couple. These may be ordered six weeks in advance of the wedding or shower. Call 724-352-0212 for price quote.
All of our teas are available in a carry out cup for $1.00 per cup. It’s not fancy but is just enough to let you know what the flavor is like!
Q. Does The Stillroom Gift & Tea Shop serve high tea?
No, we are not equipped with rest rooms. I can’t think of anything worse than having tea and no restrooms! We will direct you to the local tea houses that have been serving high tea for years and do it very well at that!
Q: What type of gift ware do you sell?
A: Totally quirky and unique…no primitives or country decor, (not that there’s anything wrong with that) it’s just not our cup of tea!
Q: What are The Stillroom Gift & Tea Shop hours?
A: For the first time in eight years we have new business hours at the 111 State Street location. We are now open Wednesday and Thursday from 10-6, Friday from 10 to 4 & Saturdays from 10 to 2.
We are not open during light up night. The shop is just a bit too small to accomodate an onslaught of shoppers.
Q: Why do we sell Stash Tea?
A: There are literally hundreds of tea companies. The Stillroom decided to sell Stash Tea for two reasons. First and foremost, it is very good tea! The second is that my husband and I lived in Portland, Oregon for a few years when Stash was a start up company so we were very familiar with the tea. When my dream came true in owning and operating a shop, we wanted to support this tea company because it is from a part of our country that we loved so much while we were there. To even things up, we introduced east coast family owned Harney & Sons teas into the shop in 2003.
Q: What other items do we sell that are produced locally or in the USA?
A: We offer LaPrima coffee by the pound from The Strip, La Peri Dolci biscotti from Penn Hills, concrete European reproductions from a Greensburg artist, kaleidoscopes from Zelienople, Harney & Sons loose teas, excellent Belgian chocolates from Divani’s Chocolate Boutique in Foxburg, This list is long and it starts in our own back yard and expands throughout this country and across the sea!
